My Story

Hi there! I’m Ashley Harris (she/her), a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in North Carolina. Before opening my private practice, I spent several years working in community-based mental health, providing outpatient therapy and in-home counseling for youth, families, and adults.

During that time, I had the privilege of supporting individuals navigating complex life challenges. Those experiences deepened my commitment to providing compassionate, accessible mental health care and continue to shape the way I show up as a therapist today.

Growing up, I was often one of the few Black children in my social circles and never quite felt like I fit into a single box. I remember being asked questions like, “What are you mixed with?” and hearing comments such as “You’re not Black enough,” “You talk White,” or “You speak well for a Black person.”

Those experiences left me feeling unseen and unsure of where I belonged. They also sparked a deep curiosity about identity and the ways messages from others shape how we see ourselves.

Coming from a diverse family background, I witnessed firsthand how racial disparities and generational trauma can impact families and communities. As a teenager, I saw my mother survive a life-threatening domestic violence incident and rebuild our lives as a single parent.

Later in life, I survived my own abusive relationship. These experiences deepened my understanding of resilience, healing, and the ways trauma can impact individuals across generations. They ultimately inspired me to become a therapist and create a space where others — especially those from diverse or historically underserved backgrounds — can feel seen, valued, and supported in their healing journey.

Outside of work, I enjoy reading, crafting, gardening, birdwatching, spending time outdoors, traveling, and being with family and friends. I also love playing with my dogs and finding small ways to recharge and stay connected to the things that bring me joy.

Professionally

In my practice, I provide therapy for individuals navigating trauma and PTSD, anxiety, depression, and perinatal mental health concerns. I support individuals and families through a wide range of life challenges—from fertility, pregnancy, postpartum adjustment, and parenting stress to trauma recovery,  relationship changes, and career or academic stressors.

I work with individuals across different stages of life, including educators and fellow clinicians. I welcome clients from diverse backgrounds, including those from BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities. I strive to create a space where people feel seen, respected, and supported as they explore their experiences and move toward healing. In my work, I approach this work with cultural humility and a deep respect for the identities, experiences, and communities that shape each person’s story.

My approach to therapy is humanistic and person-centered, grounded in empathy, curiosity, and collaboration. I believe meaningful change happens when people feel safe enough to explore their experiences openly and honestly. In our work together, we focus on understanding the patterns that may be contributing to distress while building tools that support emotional resilience, self-compassion, and greater balance in daily life.

Clients often describe me as warm, thoughtful, and easy to talk to. I strive to create a nonjudgmental space where you can show up as your authentic self while exploring both the challenges you’re facing and the strengths you already carry.
